THE ROOT by Magna Carda

Video by David Bates, Jr. / Streaming Museum

Everybody come from somewhere or maybe no where. The place you wake from, the place we ain’t from that makes us scared. The projects, the over seas, the trailer parks, the poverty line. Place where ain’t no art on the walls just pictures of Jesus and civil rights leaders or confederate flags. And Elvis observe from the plastic of her seat and then struggling mothers. Young brothers turn into fathers and troublesome cousins that we hangout with that sinks us farther. Cause trouble’s in numbers. But we can’t help it that’s where we from. And we ain’t got that education, no systems to teach us. Instead we see who we are not and think they all beneath us. Cause he carrying heat and she got her college degree on. Cause the sweetest love don knocked you up and he don’t wanna keep her. We all living different for a reason.

We come from the root. The Root. The Root. The Root.

Where you from? who you know? How you know ’em? Where you goin’? What’s life coming from the bottom at the root? Try to rise up and go to school for my truth.

(strong, so make your dream [grow on? ]. strong, so make your dream grow on.)

Everybody come from no where to make it somewhere. And going back to where we come from, sometimes we’re so scared. Double checking funds to secure we got enough bread. To look good, to eat good, and do better than we once did. Just trying to make ends meet each other when we’ve got nothing. (the woodle and) struggles, spirits higher, when we got comfort. No comforter for the bed, but we sleep in the drink of something. What you say to the kid that only get milk from his school lunches. Coming from different corner, part of our broken daughters. Cross the waters, to the suburbs, you really see some else-ones. Wandering from the trooper, look what that root’s taught us. Stay grinder than my childhood house, cause home is where the heart is. The start of us all. When we fall, we fall the hardest. We fall beneath us, to the beginning and with reason it’s the roots.

The Root. The Root. The Root.

Where you from? who you know? How you know ’em? Where you goin’? What’s life coming from the bottom at the root? Try to rise up and go to school for my truth.
