JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685–1750) was a German composer whose work continues to influence modern music through structure rather than style—his counterpoint, harmonic clarity, and variation-within-repetition underpin how melody, bass, rhythm, and harmony function as equal, interdependent voices today. Musicians across pop, jazz and classical traditions—including The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich—have spoken about Bach as a guide to musical thinking. Paul McCartney has pointed to Bach’s influence on melodic bass lines, while Mitchell has noted how Bach revealed that emotional directness and harmonic complexity can coexist.
